Considerations for evidence recording at the Barnahus

Presenting a factsheet, a webinar, and course

There is much more to recording interviews at a Barnahus than setting up a system and hitting record. To best perform its role, a Barnahus must comply with local/international rules and regulations of evidence recording, and be able to produce a recorded interview that holds up to scrutiny in court.

Key considerations to keep in mind when selecting and setting up your interview recording system, including:

  • Proving authenticity, in a world where ‘deep fakes’ are becoming exceedingly easy to produce;
  • Proving the child was not influenced during the interview;
  • Building trust in the evidence recording procedure from day 1;
  • Ensuring data is readable long into the future, and that secure access is possible on demand;
  • Planning for the storage requirements of exponential growth in interview files;
  • GDPR implications.

The Considerations for evidence recording at the Barnahus factsheet and the webinar below provide essential guidance for planning for the interview room set up at a Barnahus or similar service. Register for our online course to go deeper on the topic.

About the webinar

In this webinar, Emil Flam, Business Development Manager at Indigo Systems, outlines their digital evidence recording system. Designed for use by law enforcement agencies and legal entities, the system includes features such as an automated editing bot for recorded evidence. This bot is designed to perform alterations for confidentiality purposes while maintaining the original data’s integrity.

Flam further discusses the system’s publishing function, which aims to facilitate controlled distribution of evidence with external parties by allowing users to set access levels for each shared item. The system also includes a feature that provides legal entities access to the recordings. Towards the end of the webinar, future plans for the system are detailed, which involve expanding automated transcription services to more languages and integrating mobile phone recording functionality

About the author and presenter: Emil Hagland Flam, Business Development Manager at Indico Systems Group, Norway. The Indico secure digital recording and evidential management system is currently in use by a number of Barnahus and similar setups through Europe.

The factsheet was co-authored by PROMISE and Indico Systems.

The PROMISE Webinar Series is co-organised with Terre des Hommes, a partner of this project, as part of the ChildHub’s child protection webinar series.
